3M student support funds are making a difference

Scholarships and fellowships play a key role in 3M’s multifaceted approach to supporting the next generation of science and business talent from the University of Minnesota.
10 generous 3M-funded scholarships and fellowships have helped:
95 students in fall 2018
478 students since 2011, when the U of M’s Driven fundraising campaign began
750 students throughout the years

Highlighting...the 3M Diversity Scholarship
Created in 2015, this scholarship in the College of Science and Engineering (CSE) is boosting the number of underrepresented students pursuing STEM degrees—and ultimately helping to develop a more diverse workforce for industry partners like 3M.
Scholarship facts and benefits:
46 student recipients since 2015
$10,000 per year (renewable up to 4 years)
89% retention rate
Gives CSE a competitive edge in recruiting talented students from underrepresented backgrounds, who are often heavily recruited by other top research institutions
41 student recipients in 2018-19, who are:
68% Hispanic, 17% African-American, 15% American Indian
Majoring in:Aerospace engineering
Chemical engineering
Chemistry
Computer engineering
Computer science
Materials science and engineering
Mechanical engineering

CSE’s current freshman class is the most diverse and academically prepared in the college’s history. The average ACT score is 31.8, the college’s highest ever. First-year students of color are at an all-time high—20.2 percent of the incoming class.
